Running board game night with connected dice

The problem with ordinary dice

Board game night has one reliable enemy: bookkeeping. Somebody has to add the numbers, somebody has to find the rules, and somebody always rolls a die off the table at the worst moment. Connected dice do not change the games — they remove the admin that interrupts them.

What the dice report

Set up takes a minute. Lift the dice out of the case, open the free app, and each die announces itself. From then on every roll appears on screen the instant the die settles. Pick a game from the list and the app keeps the score, enforces the turn order and shows the rules to whoever asks, which means the two people who have played it before stop being the referees.

Packs and shells

For a group that does not want to learn a new game, the party challenges are the better entry point: short rounds, obvious rules, nothing to set up. For younger players there is a maths mode that hides practice inside a race. For a tabletop campaign, clip on the RPG shells and the same six dice become a polyhedral set, so your damage rolls land on the screen next to the character sheet.

Games that get better

Two small habits make the evening smoother. Use a tray — a soft, walled surface settles a die faster and keeps the rolls readable. And charge the case the morning of, not five minutes before guests arrive; a full set tops up quickly, but not that quickly.
